A journey on a Pullman service would be regarded by many as the pinnacle of rail travel in the steam era. The LNER A1 4-6-2 locomotive and complementary Pullman coaches included in this set represent how the ‘Flying Scotsman’ may have looked in the LNER heyday of the 1930s, that being the Flying Scotsman service and not the somewhat famous locomotive named after it. This set features a locomotive and rolling stock matched to represent the sort of rail operations as could be seen towards the end of BRs custody of the UK rail system in the 1990s.

The Class 20 was one of the classes of diesel locomotive in mainline service at the time and some of them found themselves painted out of BR Blue for the first time in over a decade and into the striking colour scheme of BR Railfreight, a patchwork of grey, red and yellow.

The wagons included in this set represent those that may often be seen being hauled by the BR Railfreight locomotives, in this case not a block train but one tasked with hauling individual wagonloads.

On the 3rd of July 1938 the LNER A4 locomotive 'Mallard' set the world speed record for a steam engine at 126 mph at Stoke Bank, south of Grantham. Years later with the nationalisation of the railways the locomotive's feat was not forgotten, with 'Mallard' maintaining its celebrity status among the trainspotters of the day while continuing to haul express passenger trains along the East Coast Mainline. This Train Set encapsulates the enduring allure of 'Mallard' as it would have appeared during the early 1950s.

The 485 series was introduced in 1968 as a limited express train compatible with three power sources, DC and AC 50/60Hz, based on the previously introduced 481 and 483 series, and was manufactured for a long period until 1979, and was active in electrified sections nationwide as a representative limited express train of the Japanese National Railways.

The 489 series was introduced in 1971, based on the 485 series and equipped with measures to pass through the Shinetsu Main Line between Yokokawa and Karuizawa.

The Moha 484 and 488 series 200 series are a group of cars manufactured from 1972 onwards, and the AU12 cooler, also known as the mushroom type used in the previous 0 series, was changed to a centralized AU71 cooler, and the conductor's room and the service room were abolished, increasing the capacity to the same as the Moha 485 series.

The Moha 485 and 489 series, which are united with the Moha 484 and 488 series 200 series, have the same number as the previous ones, but the cooler has been changed to a distributed AU13.
