Steam Era Models R16 HO BW Second Class Passenger Car Kit

20.00 $

BW Second Class Passenger Car Kit

The 58' clerestory roofed corridor passenger cars represented by this kit were introduced into Victorian Railways service from 1911 to 1922. Thirty five AW first class, thirty nine BW second class and forty seven ABW composite cars of this type were constructed and further cars with semi elliptic roofs (some 64' long) were produced 1924-26. The cars were utilised on main, cross country and branchline service and with the 71' E stock, provided the backbone of the V.R. passenger fleet for more than 50 years. Originally gas lit, all W cars were converted to electric lighting from the mid 1920's. They also initially featured bevelled mirrors above the windows and three horizontal rails across the lower window panes. These features were eliminated in the 1920's. Screw couplings were replaced with auto couplings and transition hooks in the 1930's. Our model represents a car in its final condition as operating from the early 1950's to the mid 1980's.

Hornby R40132A OO SR 6 Wheel Coach 3rd Class Fitted Lights 1909

38.00 $

This six wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the Southern Railway (SR) having been inherited from its predecessors such as the London & South West Railway (LSWR) and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR).

Small coaches such as this six wheeled coach proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This SR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and electric lighting.

This model also features our new Maglight system which allows coach lights to be turned on and off using a magnetic wand, removing the need for track pick-ups which would increase rolling resistance.

Hornby R60014 OO L&MR Flat Bed Wagon Pack

43.00 $

General goods vehicles, or 'Merchandise Waggons' of the later Stephenson period were simple four-wheeled platform vehicles with sprung 3' diameter wheels and were typically around 14' in length, 'with a superficial surface of platform area of seventy-five square feet' able to carry 'a considerable quantity of light goods' of 'about four tons weight.' By 1841 dumb-buffers and coupling chains were fitted and as the decade progressed, the length of the waggons shortened and the width increased, creating a greater load area. The fitment of loose sides of around 2' in height allowed for the carriage of coal and loads were protected by canvas tarpaulins painted with the company initials to prevent their theft, with each waggon having its number, weight and gauge clearly marked in white paint on a black background. As travel time by railway was superior to that of road travel by coach, coach companies sought new ways to compete, leading to mail coaches and stagecoaches being loaded onto the 'open carriage waggons' for onward travel to places such as Liverpool or Manchester. These connecting, or 'branch coaches' were to become the antecedent for the Branch Line railways of the future.

Steam Era Models R27P HO QR Bogie Open Wagon with Plate Frame Bogies Kit

11.00 $

QR Bogie Open Wagon Kit

QR number 1 was built at the VR Newport workshops in 1889, being the forerunner of a long lived and useful class of wagon. Wright and Edwards of Braybrook built 150 wagons, numbered 2 to 151 in 1890/91 with a further 50 wagons, numbered 152 to 201 constructed by the VR at Braybrook in 1892.

These wagons were built with swing motion diamond frame bogies, a composite steel and wood underframe with truss rods and were rated at 26 tons capacity. Construction of QR resumed in 1912 with a further 175 wagons constructed to a slightly altered design, featuring plate frame bogies, in the following two years. During the 1930s the fleet were rebuilt with all steel underframes, auto-couplers and heavier bracing for the ends. The brake equipment on wagons 1-201 was altered from a combination brake cylinder-auxiliary reservoir to a larger brake cylinder with separate auxiliary reservoir. The all steel underframe was stronger and the rated capacity increased to 30 tons, with a further increase to 31 tons in the late 1950s when buffers and truss-rods were removed.

The kit represents a wagon as running from the mid to late 1950s until final withdrawal in the 1990s.

Includes Plate Frame Bogies.

Models illustrated have been fitted with couplers (not included).
