While the A1 was a fantastic locomotive that served its purpose as intended, it became clear reasonably quickly that some modifications could be made that would greatly improve its performance. These modifications however were too significant to avoid reclassifying the locomotives and as such the A1 Felstead 2743 was the first to be withdrawn from service only a handful of years after it was introduced, emerging from its shed in August 1928 as the first A3 ‘Super Pacific.’

The newly designated A3 locomotives had an improved boiler, larger cylinders and a conversion from right to left hand drive. 27 of the class were built as A3 locomotives from the get go, with all of the in service A1 examples being converted before 1950, the last such example to undergo this transformation was the then BR numbered 60068 Sir Visto.

Night Hawk first entered LNER service on the fairly pleasing 24th October 1924 as locomotive number 2577 as an A1 locomotive. Rebuilt in January 1944 to an A3, the locomotive would go in to be numbered 78, and then 60078 under BR. Night Hawk would go on to be withdrawn on the 22nd October 1962, almost making it a nice round 38 years in service, before being scrapped at Doncaster in 1963.

Hornby R30048TXS OO BR Class 55 Deltic Co-Co D9018 Ballymoss TTS DCC Sound

Built in 1961 and 1962, the Class 55 Co-Co diesel locomotives were specifically designed for the high-speed express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line (ECML). The Class, built by English Electric, was powered by two 18-cylinder D18-25 series II type V Deltic engines, each rated at 1,650 hp continuous at 1500 rpm. This unique engine also powered the DP1 prototype that preceded the Class 55s, with the prototype being named 'Deltic' after its engines, hence the Class 55 also became known as 'Deltics'.

After the introduction of the HSTs, the Class 55s were deposed from many of their express duties, instead being placed on secondary services. It soon became clear that maintaining the Deltics for these secondary duties would not be economically viable meaning that the class were run with minimal maintenance until they failed, at which point they would be sent to Doncaster Works to be scrapped. Six locomotives were preserved, including 55 002 'The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry' which was selected by the National Railway Museum to join the National Collection.

After privatisation of the British railway network, the preserved Deltics became ideal candidates for mainline running due to their strong performance characteristics relative to other preserved diesels. This has included running passenger charters as well as freight services. On 29 November 2017 it was announced via the official Royal Scots Grey website that 55 022 'Royal Scots Grey' and D9016 'Gordon Highlander', plus all spares, had been sold to Locomotive Services Limited, with D9016 recently moving to LSL's facility in Margate.

Entering service from the mid 1956 onwards these 10 English Electric 750 HP shunting locomotives were numbered from 800 to 809. They were predominantly found working around Port Adelaide and in particular Gilman Yard. Later and from time to time they could also be found working Passenger trains around the suburbs. They remained in service until the late 80s and some units through until 1991, all except 801 were scrapped. When AN commenced operations the class leader 800 was renumbered to 810.

Early History of the 82 Class

March 23rd, 1994 heralded a new era in freight rail operations in Australia. On this day, Clyde Engineering in association with General Motors EMD released the first of fifty eight ‘82' Class locomotives from Clyde’s Mittagong plant.

These locomotives along with their imported cousins, the EMD Canadian built 90 class, marked a new beginning in the way a locomotive fleet was operated and maintained.

Whilst these locomotives were operated by Freight Rail (a business unit of State Rail), they are actually supplied and serviced by Clyde at their Kooragang Island maintenance facility. This leasing arrangement was known as ‘Ready Power’

Under the terms of this contract, Clyde would be responsible for the overall up keep and maintenance of these units for a period of fifteen years. Although minor servicing and provisioning was undertaken by Freight Rail, major servicing and repairs was completed by Clyde.

With the introduction of these locomotives a wide spread reduction of the NSW locomotive fleet had begun. The first casualties were the veteran fleet of 44 class Alco’s, then the 45 and 442 classes along with the Mark I 48 class. Further reductions to the locomotive occurred with the withdrawals of the 422 and 49 classes.

This overall fleet reduction reduced the average age of Freight Rail’s locomotive fleet from over twenty five year old to approximately ten.

These locomotives have travelled all over NSW and have ventured into Queensland and Victoria on intermodal freight services, and in South Australia on the Leigh Creek coal service. They are currently seen on both coal and wheat services all over the state, through Sydney, and the occasional local trip train around the Sydney metropolitan area.

Hornby R30087 OO LNER A3 Class No. 45 Lemberg (Diecast Footplate & Flickeirng Firebox)

LNER No. 2544 'Lemberg' was built at Doncaster Works in July 1924 as a member of the A1 Class. In 1927 'Lemberg' became one of the first of the class to be rebuilt as an A3 Class locomotive. In 1946 'Lemberg' was renumbered under Thompson’s renumbering scheme, becoming No. 45 before being renumbered again upon nationalisation of the railways, becoming BR No. 60045.

As with other A3s, a double chimney was fitted to 'Lemberg' in 1958 followed by smoke deflectors to combat the resultant reduction in visibility caused by the softer exhaust blast. After a long service, the locomotive was withdrawn in 1964.
