The A1 is a locomotive that will always be tied to the names Sir Nigel Gresley and LNER, however only one of these was involved in the design and construction from the beginning. The A1 was originally a Great Northern Railway design, with number 1470 ‘Great Northern’ being one of only two examples to outshop into GNR service. These locomotives were powerful, and almost immediately served their purpose of comfortably outperforming the older ‘Atlantic’ locomotives that were being pushed to their limit between London and the North.

These ‘Pacific’ locomotives did just that, and they would go on to become one of the most versatile locomotives in Britain. Upon amalgamation onto the LNER, some minor changes were made to the Class, but being a recent design at the time they were already close to the pinnacle of what could be achieved by any locomotive designer, let alone Sir Nigel Gresley.

4472 is a number that is engrained into the brain of every man who was once a little boy staring starry eyed and an Apple Green streak thundering though the countryside. ‘Flying Scotsman’ was built in 1923 as one of the A1 locomotives built under the LNER, it is the only member of the class to go on to be preserved. The trials and tribulations faced by Flying Scotsman in preservation have cemented its status as one of the most famous steam locomotives ever built.

In 1990 a group of like-minded people came together in the belief that they could construct from new, a Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific locomotive. The first steam locomotive built in the United Kingdom since 'Evening Star' in 1960 and it would be built to meet modern safety and certification standards to enable it to run on mainline connected heritage railways. After a period of nearly 20 years the dream became a reality on the 29th July 2008 when locomotive No. 60163 'Tornado' moved under its own power at Darlington.

With a 4-6-2 wheel configuration, 'Tornado' is 72' 11 3/4" (22.24m) long, 9' 2 7/8" (2.82m) wide, 13' (3.96m) high, one inch lower than the original A1s in order to meet current Network Rail OLE requirements. The locomotive weights 105.2 long tons and the tender weights 60.9 long tons and is capable of a top speed of 100mph (160km/h) but is at present certificated to 75mph (121km/h). The boiler, based on the original Diagram 118, has a pressure of 250psi, is 6'5" (1.96m) in diameter by 29'2" (8.89m) in length which powers three 19" x 26" (480mm x 660mm) cylinders. The frames of the original 49 Class A1 Pacifics (built between 1948 - 1949, withdrawn and scrapped by 1966) were cut from two pieces of steel then welded together.

However, modern manufacturing techniques enable the 48'5" long steel frame of 'Tornado' to be electronically cut from a single piece of steel, creating a very strong and stable frame. During construction some adjustments were also made to the tender, increasing the water capacity from 5,000 to 6,000 gallons and reducing the coal capacity from 9 to 7.5 tons.

Since it entered traffic in 2008 'Tornado' has worn various liveries, starting with 'Workshop' grey. After mainline trials it was liveried in LNER Apple Green, applied in the traditional way by hand at the NRM paint shop. In 2010 it was re-liveried into BR Brunswick Green, with different BR logo changes during the following two years.

The DF200 series is a diesel-electric locomotive developed by JR Freight, with the prototype appearing in 1992.

The 0-series, which appeared in 1994, all have red skirts and have been consistently used within Hokkaido since their introduction.

Keiyo Rinkai Railway was established as Japan's first coastal railway, and opened the Rinkai Main Line in 1963, handling freight transport in the Keiyo coastal industrial area.

Among the KD55 series, No. 103 was fitted with an engine from a former JNR DD13 series transfer vehicle, and is used to pull freight trains on the Rinkai Main Line.

No. 08570’s main duty in service was shunting motorail vans and sleeper portions at Edinburgh Waverly. It was painted in an Intercity Swallow livery. 08570 was withdrawn from service on 18th January 1992 and then stored at Motherwell. On 7th and 8th September 1993, the shunter was cut up by M.C. Metal Processing staff on-site at Motherwell.

Class 08 shunters are common, but our model of No. 08570 is a one-of-a-kind model. Liveried in a BR Intercity Swallow with intricate detail, this model is DCC-ready and compatible with our HM7000 8-Pin decoder.

Twenty-nine steam locomotives of the GWR Class 6000, also known as the King Class, were constructed between 1927 and 1930. These engines were named after notable English kings, and this honour was reflected in their sleek angular lines and rivets that shimmered in the light. The regal class boasted taper boilers, copper-capped chimneys and brass bonnet safety valve covers. Many of the locomotives were in service on the West of England main line between Paddington and Wolverhampton.

No. 6029 ‘King Stephen’ was constructed in August 1930 and, in May 1936, it was renamed ‘King Edward VIII’. A double chimney was fitted in December 1957. The locomotive was withdrawn in July 1962 and scrapped at Cashmore’s, Newport, in November 1962.

A vibrant GWR green livery is applied on this regal model, suited to the King Class of locomotives, along with its coupled tender. Two etched nameplates of ‘King Stephen’ can be applied to the chassis, just above the wheel. Please be aware that this is not suitable for children. This model is DCC-ready and is compatible with our HM7000 21-Pin decoder. The accessory bag contains a vac pipe, a bar coupling, a hook coupling, two cylinder draincocks, a brake rod and a tender brake rod.

One of the streamlined A4 Class created by Sir Nigel Gresley, 'Commonwealth of Australia' bore the original LNER number 4491, before its change to No. 12, and 60012 under British Railways. Entering service in 22 June 1937, 'Commonwealth of Australia was withdrawn in 20 August 1964 after 27 years of service under both Grouping and Nationalisation.
