Hornby R60202 OO LMS Salmon Bogie Wagon Era 3

35.00 $

The LMS, being the largest of the Big Four railway companies, was behind a great number of freight wagons, including some of the first large bogie flat wagons. British Rail, when they took charge of the UK national rail network chose an aquatic theme for their freight wagons, and as such the LMS bogie flat design would come to be called the Salmon. Salmon wagons were designed to carry lengths of rail and later, track panels.

The 65 foot length of the wagon enabled them to easily carry standard 60 foot lengths of track and consists of up to ten of these wagons would be connected to enable the transportation of even longer lengths.Batches of these wagons, totalling 894 examples, would be constructed between 1949 and 1961 with a further batch built in 1983.

Almost all of these batches would see a rebuild at various points in time with items such as the bogies and bolster positions changing and the addition of rail cranes and end bolsters on some variants. Each different variant would receive a different TOPS code.

LMS Salmon wagons were the earliest type built, they were fitted with bolsters on wooden planked decks. Wagons of this specification would usually be used independently and would therefore be a part of a mixed consist, this would mean that they would be unfitted in terms of brakes other than a hand brake on their early type bogies. Wagons of this type would be limited to 40mph or 50mph depending on use.

The Hornby Salmon range is a new tooling for 2023 with almost all variants of the wagon catered for. Fitted with diecast chassis, these wagons have fantastic weight that rolls freely on metal wheels. Bolsters are included in the accessory bag can be fitted to represent the different ways these wagons would have appeared.

Hornby R40035 OO FGW Mk3 Buffet (TRFB) Coach K 40204

35.00 $

In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe.

Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long, enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk breaks and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers as well as a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988.

In 1996, as a result of the privatisation of British Rail, The InterCity Great Western franchise was awarded to Great Western Trains who in 1998 became First Great Western (FGW). FGW operated Mk3 coaches in HST car-sets from London Paddington to various locations in the west, south wales and south-west. FGW was rebranded as Great Western Railways in September 2015 and in 2017 started to replace its InterCity 125 sets with new Hitachi Class 800 and 802 sets.

Steam Era Models R14 HO SFX/VFLX Bulkhead Flat Wagon Kit

12.00 $

SFX/VFLX Bulkhead Flat Wagon Kit

The SFX flat wagons entered service from 1967 to 1970, constructed in the VR workshops at Ballarat and Newport. Designed as a general purpose flat wagon incorporating bulkheads, these wagons were designed for the transport of long loads such as pipes, poles etc. and can also be fitted for container traffic. The first 25 were fitted with a wooden floor, but the kit represents a steel floored wagon numbered in the 26-120 range. Wagons 1-50 were fitted with ratchet handbrakes, the rest being fitted with Miner handbrakes.

From 1987, most VFLX (recoded SFX) wagons were converted to container traffic use only, by cutting down the bulkheads and "skeletising" the floor to reduce tare weight. Some remain (as of 6/89) as built for rail transport and other departmental traffic. Australian Model Railway Magazine, Issue 125, April 1984, has an article on the SFX class and details of variants, but the associated drawing is not accurate.

Hornby R60250 BR 27T Iron Ore Tippler Wagon 1971 - 1996

14.00 $

An iron ore tippler wagon was an all-steel mineral wagon that did not have doors. Each wagon featured heavier axleboxes for carrying iron ore. The wagons could be turned over for unloading at its destination, the steelworks.

The British Iron and Steel Foundation proposed that a 27-ton tippler wagon could be introduced into traffic and provided extensive tabular details as justification. Differences between the ironstone hopper wagon and the 27-ton tippler wagon featured very minor dimensional changes and the fitting of self-contained buffers. Some iron ore tippler wagons were intended for chalk traffic, but the exact number is not known.

A ZKV Zander wagon is used to represent transporting iron ore on the BR network. This model comes in a bauxite livery to represent one of the numerous ZKV Zander wagons that were unpainted. Each vertical rib has box sections.
