Unlike passenger cars used in train formations from the 20-series sleeper onwards, passenger cars used as individual cars from the past are commonly known as old-style passenger cars, and many were scrapped by the end of the JNR era, but some were taken over by JR and private railways for events.

The old-style passenger cars at Gunma Rolling Stock Center have been renovated, including making the doors remotely lockable, and in 2022, SuhaFu 42 2173 will be converted into a lounge car, SuhaFu 42 2234 will be painted blue, and the interior will be changed to a wood grain pattern except for SuhaFu 32 and Ohani 36.

Currently, they are mainly used for special trains in the JR East area, and sometimes run on other private railways.

The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car that has been in operation since 1977. Of the updated 1700 series cars in operation in Hokkaido, two cars, 1759 and 1766, have been painted in the standard JNR color of vermilion and cream as part of the 2021 Kushiro region anniversary event, attracting attention.

The EF210-100 series was produced by JR Freight from 1999 as a general-purpose locomotive for direct current sections, and appeared from number 101 to 173.

From number 109 onwards, the pantograph was changed to a single-arm type. A new paint scheme was introduced around 2018. It is in operation over a wide area from Kuroiso to Hatabu.

The W7 series was introduced in April 2014, ahead of the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2015.

The maximum commercial speed is 260km/h, and when the Hokuriku Shinkansen opens, it will be possible to travel from Tokyo to Kanazawa in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The Kiha 58 series is an express diesel car of the Japanese National Railways that was introduced in 1961. The KiRo 28 series is a green car equipped with one engine, and the 100 series for long formations was equipped with air conditioning from the beginning of production, and the 2100 series was equipped with an air conditioning power supply unit that could supply power to other cars. Green cars had a light green class band under the window, but with the change in painting regulations in 1978, the class band was abolished, and cars that entered inspection gradually began to have no class band.

The E129 series is a new train for the Niigata area that was introduced in 2014. It was introduced to replace the 115 series that is currently operating in the area, and the E127 series that was transferred to the Echigo Tokimeki Railway.

Based on the E233 series, it is designed to be cold and snow resistant for use in the Niigata area. The body is decorated with a stripe in "Toki Pink" that evokes the Japanese crested ibis of Sado Island, and "Golden Yellow" that evokes autumn rice ears. It is made up of 4-car and 2-car formations, with the 4-car formations being the 0 series and the 2-car formations being the 100 series.

One-pantograph and two-pantograph cars were manufactured for the 2-car formation, the Kumoha E129-100.

The 401 series is an AC/DC commuter train developed for the Joban Line in 1960, and the front of the leading car was given a high driver's cab like the Kuha 153-500 series. The exterior was originally painted rose pink, but in 1983 it was gradually changed to cream with a blue stripe in time for the Tsukuba Expo held in 1985.

The Class 755 bi-mode multiple unit trains are built by Stadler Rail for Greater Anglia as one of five EMU’s for the UK, part of the highly configurable FLIRT modular train family and designed for greater capacity, the typical 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead power supply, and comfort over long-distance journeys. The Class 755 entered service on the 29th of July 2019 having been delivered to Greater Anglia the previous November.
