Engineered to deal with the steep gradients of the Calder Valley route which it became synonymous with them being named 'Calder Valley sets', the Class 110 was one of the first DMU's with the highest power to weight ratio of any naturally aspirated unit. In 1982 the middle trailer car was removed from most sets to reduce maintenance costs and further improve acceleration along the northern route.

The 489 series was introduced in 1971 as a vehicle based on the 485 series with modifications to allow passage between Yokokawa and Karuizawa on the Shinetsu Main Line.

As the number of trains increased, the same design changes were made as for the 485 series, and from 1972, a group with KuHa 489 200 and 600 series trains as the lead cars were manufactured.

As per its origins, this series was used on the Shinetsu Main Line express trains that passed through Usui Pass and connected Ueno, Nagano, and Kanazawa, as well as on the Hokuriku Main Line express trains "Raicho" and "Shirasagi" together with the 485 series.

The 923 series is an electric track comprehensive test car for the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, manufactured in 2000 to run at 270km/h and to replace the aging 922 series. It is a 7-car train based on the 700 series, with cars 1-3 and 6 being used to test electrical equipment, car 4 being used to test track equipment, and the other cars being used as meeting rooms and tour guide rooms. The body color is different from the general Tokaido Shinkansen cars, with yellow and blue stripes, and it is affectionately known as "Doctor Yellow."

The E231-500 series was introduced in 2002 for the Yamanote Line.

Two six-door cars were coupled in a train, but they were replaced with four-door cars by 2017 to accommodate movable platform gates.

After the successor E235 series was introduced in 2017, they were gradually transferred to local trains on the Chuo and Sobu lines, and ceased operation on the Yamanote Line in January 2020.

The 381 series was the first tilting-type express train for commercial use developed by Japanese National Railways, and made its debut on the Shinano express train in 1973 when the Central Central Line was electrified.

The Saro 381 type was different from the green cars of conventional express trains, and featured a unique appearance with long horizontal windows and bars.

The 117 series is a DC suburban train that began operation in 1979.

The 117-100 series was a model change from the 117-0 series that appeared in 1986, with changes to the side windows and bogies. It was a maximum of 12 cars in formation and was mainly used for the "Special Rapid Service".

The 401 series is an AC/DC commuter train developed for the Joban Line in 1960, and the front of the leading car was given a high driver's cab like the Kuha 153-500 series. The exterior was originally painted rose pink, but in 1983 it was gradually changed to cream with a blue stripe in time for the Tsukuba Expo held in 1985.

Tobu 500 series "Liberty" is a limited express train that was introduced in 2017, and 11 three-car trains are in operation.

Unlike the conventional 100 series "Spacia," this series is composed of three cars, and is also designed to be split and merged, giving it greater flexibility in operation.

The front of the leading car has a structure that allows it to be penetrated when two trains are joined to form a six-car train.

Currently, it is used on all lines, including the "Liberty Kegon" and "Liberty Kinu" on the Nikko Line, the "Liberty Aizu" on the Yagan Railway and Aizu Railway, the "Liberty Ryomo" on the Isesaki Line, the "Urban Park Liner" on the Noda Line, and the night train "Oze Night Train."

The Shinano Railway SR1 series is a new train that was introduced in 2020.

The 100 series liner cars were manufactured in 2019, and the 200 and 300 series general-purpose cars were manufactured from 2020 onwards.

The 200 and 300 series are characterized by curved gold lines based on the red color, which is the symbolic color of Shinano Railway.

The 485 series appeared in 1968 as a limited express train compatible with three power sources: DC and AC 50/60Hz, and was active in electrified sections nationwide.

The "Kitakinki" is a limited express train that connects Shin-Osaka and Kinosaki, and was introduced when the Fukuchiyama Line between Takarazuka and Fukuchiyama, and the Sanin Main Line between Fukuchiyama and Kinosaki were electrified with the timetable change in November 1986.

The 485 series collected from various places was used, and it was characterized by a variety of modified cars and short formations of 4 or 6 cars.

From around 1990, the 485 series of the "Kitakinki" was modified to the 183 series 800 series by removing the AC equipment.

The Kiha 65 Edel Tango is a joyful train that appeared in 1988.

The train of the same name, "Edel Tango", started operation on July 16, 1988 as a special express train that ran between Shin-Osaka and Amanohashidate, partially entering the Kitakinki Tango Railway Miyafuku Line (currently the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyafuku Line).

Between Shin-Osaka and Fukuchiyama, it was coupled with the 485 series "Kitakinki" express train, and both the up and down trains were unpowered and were coupled to the rear of the 485 series train, being towed by it.

The coupling of "Kitakinki" and "Edel Tango" could be seen until 1996, when "Tango Discovery" appeared and began coupling with "Kitakinki", and "Edel Tango" was discontinued.
