The 489 series was introduced in 1971 as a vehicle based on the 485 series with modifications to allow passage between Yokokawa and Karuizawa on the Shinetsu Main Line.
As the number of trains increased, the same design changes were made as for the 485 series, and from 1972, a group with KuHa 489 200 and 600 series trains as the lead cars were manufactured.
As per its origins, this series was used on the Shinetsu Main Line express trains that passed through Usui Pass and connected Ueno, Nagano, and Kanazawa, as well as on the Hokuriku Main Line express trains "Raicho" and "Shirasagi" together with the 485 series.

The 923 series is an electric track comprehensive test car for the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, manufactured in 2000 to run at 270km/h and to replace the aging 922 series. The E231-500 series was introduced in 2002 for the Yamanote Line.
Two six-door cars were coupled in a train, but they were replaced with four-door cars by 2017 to accommodate movable platform gates.

The 485 series appeared in 1968 as a limited express train compatible with three power sources: DC and AC 50/60Hz, and was active in electrified sections nationwide.
The "Kitakinki" is a limited express train that connects Shin-Osaka and Kinosaki, and was introduced when the Fukuchiyama Line between Takarazuka and Fukuchiyama, and the Sanin Main Line between Fukuchiyama and Kinosaki were electrified with the timetable change in November 1986.

Between Shin-Osaka and Fukuchiyama, it was coupled with the 485 series "Kitakinki" express train, and both the up and down trains were unpowered and were coupled to the rear of the 485 series train, being towed by it.
