Hornby TT6011 TT LNER Dia034 Toad B Brake Van 140526

20.00 $

In the days of the railways when long trains of cargo would be assembled almost ad hoc, it was not practical to hook up brake lines on every wagon. With the need to drop of cargo at many different locations and sometimes in an order requiring some shunting it would not have been practical to disconnect and reconnect brake lines all the time, assuming that this would even be possible across the myriad of different wagon manufacturers of the day. Such trains were referred to as ‘unfitted’.

The logical solution would be to have a dedicated vehicle specifically for the purpose of slowing and stopping the train. A guard would be stationed in the van, often with a small log burner for heat, and would apply strong brakes by means of a wheel internally. When accompanying the locomotive brakes this would bring the train to a controlled stop. On longer, heavier trains there would often be a second brake van immediately after the locomotive to aid the braking force at the front of the train.

Hornby R40227 OO LNER Coronation Observation Car 1719

67.00 $

Named to mark the coronation of King George VI, 'The Coronation' was for a time the LNER's flagship express passenger service. The train ran between London and Edinburgh in as little time as 6 hours. The service was formed by a rake of four pairs of specially designed streamlined coaches with the addition of a streamlined observation car other than in the winter when the short period of daylight precluded the views. One service was run in each direction each day, the down service departing London for Edinburgh at 16:00pm, and the up service leaving Edinburgh at 16:30pm. Services were usually pulled by an A4 Class locomotive, commonly liveried to match the rest of the train.

The coaches were based upon the successful Silver Jubilee design and featured extensive attempts to reduce drag and increase comfort including the use of articulated pairs of coaches sharing bogies which limited the gap between the coaches, and aerodynamic underframe skirting.

In total, 4 sets of coaches were built plus the two observation cars. 2 sets were used for 'Coronation' (and 'Talisman'; the return service), 1 set for the West Riding Limited service to Leeds, and 1 spare set which could be used for any of the preceding services. After the war, the services were not resumed, and the sets were split up.

After a fire in 1951, additional doors were added to the twin sets to reduce the time needed to disembark in emergencies. All coaches lost their underframe skirting to aid maintenance and reduce unnecessary weight.

One of the most novel features of the 'Coronation' was the inclusion of a specially built streamlined observation car, often affectionately named the 'beaver tail' observation car. Two were built, with one being used for the up service and the other for the down service. Passengers couldn't reserve a seat in the observation car, instead a fee was charged for the use of the carriage by the hour. In reality the streamlined shape of the roof severely limited the views out the back of the carriage. In 1959, long after the 'Coronation' service had ceased, British Railways rebuilt the observation cars with a new un-streamlined end which featured much larger windows and a new seating arrangement to significantly improve the view with the cars being used on the famously picturesque west highlands line.

Formation (observation car and locomotive both turned and arranged depending upon direction of travel):

  • Brake Third (A) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (B)
  • Open First (C) + Open First (Twin) (D)
  • Open Third (E) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (F)
  • Open Third (G) + Brake Third (Twin) (H)

SDS Models 34084 HO NSW NVJA Guards Van

52.00 $

Guards Van

These were the last timber bodied Brake vans to be built by the NSWR, they were constructed on old PHG solebars with riveted bogie transoms and utilised plywood sides with end verandas.

The first two vans were built by Clyde Workshops in 1969-70 and numbered 34001 and 34002; 34001 was built with light draw gear, timber headstock and buffers, 34002 was built with light draw gear and a steel headstock. 34003 and 34004 featured a small extended draught box.

Subsequent Clyde Workshops production of JHG and UHG Brake vans between 1972-1977 featured heavy draw gear with extended draught box and a fully boxed welded centre beam chassis. There was some simplification to the timber side detail from JHG 34014 onwards with the lower edge of the side sheet finishing flush with the end platform deck. Our model is based upon the series of van from 34014-34100.

JHG vans were built with plain bearing leaf spring 2SA style bogies and UHG vans were built with roller bearing coil sprung 2AT style bogies. UHG vans were also fitted with through Main Reservoir piping and bifurcated hoses. This was for the supply of air for pneumatic discharge hopper doors.

Our model is also fitted with a, red only, LED source and has acrylic runners moulded on the underside of the end canopies and into the upper marker lamps. The underside of the model has a 3 position Centre Off switch to allow for the marker lamps to be lit at either end.

Features

  • Highly detailed Ready-to-Run HO scale model
  • Injection moulded high quality plastic body
  • Metal detail parts
  • Full brake rigging and underfloor detail
  • Semi scale metal rimmed wheels
  • Working marker lights.
  • Genuine Kadee #158 whisker coupler
  • 18” Minimum radius recommended

Hornby TT4027B TT BR Intercity Mk3 Tourist Standard Open 42197

27.00 $

In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe.

Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long, enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk brakes and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers as well as a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988.

As BR began to move away from the corporate blue livery, some of the Mark 3 coaches and complimentary Class 43 units were painted into a new Intercity Executive livery. This livery consisted of a dark grey upper body, a stripe of white and red and a light beige sand colour on the bottom of the body. While this would be a popular and long lasting livery, the name Executive was dropped from the side of the units as the livery took over as the only one applied to Intercity sets.

Hornby TT4018 TT BR Mk2F First Open M3345 - Era 7

27.00 $

The British Rail Mark 1 coaches were not suitable for higher speed rail services, with the Mark 1 coaches being a perfect compliment for steam locomotives which saw themselves being replaced by diesel and electric locomotives as the 1960s progressed. The Mark 2 coach was introduced in 1964 and was all steel. While the Mark 2 was a progression of the Mark 1, the two shared almost no common parts, and only a passing resemblance.

In service, the Mark 2 coaches were commonly seen in the BR Blue and Grey livery and Network South East colours. The coaches were mainly hauled by larger express diesel and electric locomotives such as the Class 40, 47 and 86. As of 2022, the only Mark 2 coaches still in service are those that are part of the Network rail fleet.

The Mark 2 F sub categories had plastic internal panelling with new style seats. Visually they were similar to the Mark 3 coach although there were obvious differences between the two with the length being the most notable. The coaches also had heating and air conditioning as debuted on the Mark 3 prototypes.
