Hornby R40116A OO LB&SCR 4 Wheel Coach 3rd Class Fitted Lights 881

37.00 $

This four wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Four wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This LB&SCR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and oil lamp lighting.

This model also features our new Maglight system which allows coach lights to be turned on and off using a magnetic wand, removing the need for track pick-ups which would increase rolling resistance.

Hornby R60216 OO Railiner PVA Van Era 8

25.00 $

The PVB is a type of rail van introduced in the mid 1980s in limited numbers. While variations existed the main build of the wagon remained the same, a curtain sided private owner wagon with air or vacuum brakes. Being that the vans were curtain sided similar to a road transport trailer, they often carried the liveries of the company that they worked for. Wagons would have a working capacity of around 31 tonnes. Much of the fleet would be purchased by the Ministry of Defence when they fell out of use as a domestic freight wagon.

Hornby R60243 Mainline YGB Seacow DB980115 1996 - 2008

20.00 $

The design for the Fishkind-coded ‘Seacow’ wagons was based on a 1903 design by the London and South Western Railway. A typical hopper wagon would have slab sides with seven vertical ribs and three discharge chutes. These chutes were situated at the outside of each rail and in the centre. The end of the wagon featured three handwheels to control the chute doors.

A total of 128 wagons were constructed at Shildon Works in 1971. The last 28 wagons were intended to operate in the Southern Region and featured air brakes with a vacuum through pipe. Under BR TOPS, the 28 wagons were coded YGB and with the Fishkind code ‘Seacow’. Between 1981 and 1982, 251 ‘Seacow’ wagons were constructed by Shildon Works and Ashford Works.

These last batch of wagons largely followed the original 1903 design but featured different variations also. Hopper bodies were welded instead of rivetted, each vertical rib was formed of box sections instead of U-sections and there were more modern bogies. Throughout the 2000s, several ‘Seacow’ wagons were withdrawn from service, and some were purchased by heritage railway companies.

The ‘Seacow’ wagon model features box sections in the vertical ribs to reflect a later variation. The hook couplings enable easier coupling of other rolling stock and locomotives on your layout. Stanchions support the wagon in an MGR Hopper style. A handbrake wheel is also featured. This model comes in a Mainline livery.

The Z type carriages are an air conditioned steel passenger carriage used on the railways of Victoria, Australia. The carriages were constructed by the Victorian Railways from 1957 for use on intrastate services. For most of their service, the Z cars operated as Z sets, however, in the early 1990s most sets were broken up, with carriages merged into N sets. They thus currently run on mixed service with Z sets.

Hornby R40362C OO East Midlands Mk3 Coach Trailer Standard TS 42329

32.00 $

In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways, and a new Mark entered service in 1975. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe. Mk3 Coaches are 75ft (23m) long enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk breaks and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration.

The first Mk3 Coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 Coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 Coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Mk3s remain in service as part of HSTs with East Midlands Railway among other companies.

The British Rail Mk3 Coach was developed primarily for the Class 43 HST, but incorporated design features to enable it to be hauled by conventional locomotives. The first coach entered service in 1975 and the last were made in 1988. Most Mk3 Coaches built are still in service today, including a part of the Royal Train.

Hornby R40194 OO Transport for Wales Mk4 Standard Coach B

40.00 $

Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies.

Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport.

Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives.

Although Mk4 coaches have spent most of their lives on the ECML, there are plans to cascade them down to other lines due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
